THE
LOBSTER SMACK - CANVEY ISLAND
The oldest and the first fully-licensed Inn on Canvey Island dating
from the time of Elizabeth 1, its construction dates from the 17th
century. It is close to the sea wall on the south coast of the island
and has attracted passing trade, boatmen using Hole Haven's deep creek
could get a comfortable bed for the night. Smugglers used this Inn
and it was well known as a site for an annual fair since well before
1767. During the 1800's it was a famous venue for bare knuckle fights
lasting up to 80 rounds.
